Stix's Application

Recommended Posts

  • What would you like us to call you? DarkerStix is my handle on everything else so I'd say either that or just Stix :)
  • What is your level (Age)? I am 26 years old.
  • Where ya from? Originally I am from Nashville, TN, but at the moment I live in Bremerton, WA
  • What games do you currently play? I currently hold the world record time for Inside My Radio (Steam game), but I also have started speedrunning Castle of Illusion HD
  • What games are you looking forward to playing? Cuphead and Mighty No 9!
  • How did you hear about vVv Gaming? If it was by time travel device, please indicate the serial number. If by wizard, please indicate who. I originally found out about vVv Gaming after I attended MLG Raleigh in 2011. After that, I applied for the LoL Division and was a full member for about a year. After a while, I became super bitter about League and therefore not a very useful member so I resigned my v's and took a rather long hiatus.
  • Who do you currently know in vVv Gaming? How do you know them? Do you wish you didn't know them? I shouldn't say that I really know anyone, since it's been SO long since I was last here.
  • What are your hobbies and interests outside of gaming? Wait, what's "outside of gaming"? If I am not playing video games, I am either at work (active duty US Navy) or hanging out with my lovely wife and our fur baby.
  • Do you have problems with toxicity or toxic behavior in game? If so, what have you done to reform this behavior? Would you like us to set you up with a "correctional administrator" (please submit $15 torture device maintenance fee)? I lose my cool from time to time just like everyone else, but if I start to get angry with a game, I prefer to just take a break until the anger goes away.
  • When you play games, do you tend to grind games as much as possible, or do you often reflect on your mistakes and actively seek to improve upon them? Speed running requires a mix of both. Obviously you're going to have to grind a game for a while in order to get consistently solid times at every stage of the game. I also spend a fair bit of time watching my old runs to see where I can shave off some extra time.
  • Have you ever competed in or attended any online or LAN tournaments? National events? (PAX, LCS, IEM, etc.)? Stripper competitions? The closest I've ever come to that was when I jumped on one of the computers at MLG Raleigh 2011 and played a game of LoL...ended up winning a 3v5. I finished the game, hands shaking from nerves, only to look up and find 10 people standing behind me watching. It was surreal.
  • What type of organization are you looking to join? What would the ideal environment look like for you? Would it have complementary pudding cups? I'm just looking for a place where I can be useful. I spend a fair bit of time on other sites (reddit/r/speedrun and speedrun.com), but on those I just feel like another guy posting a VOD of his new run. I don't really just like I'm contributing anything to the community.
  • IQ Test Portion. Please complete the following sequences:
    • E Pluribus Unum, shakeweight, candyland, Hula-Hoop
    • 1, 3, 69, 69, 69, 6.9?
    • Kevin Bacon, Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Lucille Ball, Gilbert Gottfried

Hey man, long time no see! Do you play any other games or are you basically just speed running these days? I know our Rocket League Tournaments are pretty big and we still do ADL for League if you're interested (you don't have to just mentioning things). How do you like Washington? And what's a fur baby?

Do you remember Gilbert Gottfried UP ALL NIGHT!?

I'm pretty much just speed running at the moment. I just started working on learning Castle of Illusion HD and improved my Personal Best by 15 minutes. I'm still 15 minutes or so off WR, but I'll get there ;).

I love Washington. I'm stationed up here at Naval Hospital Bremerton and I couldn't be happier. The weather is great and the people are pretty cool. I have zero complaints.

A fur baby is a pet. haha. Here's a picture of out kiddos:

The big orange one is Seamus and the small calico is our new girl Ginny.

ooooo a speedrunner, ive been thinking about going into speedrunning with my low end laptop, i can only run n64 roms. Any suggestions besides the basic sm64?

It really just comes down to what you like. You can speed run pretty much anything that has an end. For example, this guy completed a 100% speed run of Animal Crossing, which took 39 hours... He improved the world record by over 10 hours by, you guessed it, not stopping to sleep.

Me personally? I don't have much interest in running anything over an hour long :/. I've run two games so far (just started like 4 months ago). I hold the world record for Inside My Radio (you can find it on Steam) at 38:48. I have also recently started running Castle of Illusion HD, but my time (43:29) is about 10 minutes over the WR.

The thing about speedrunning is that you have to find a game that you're willing to play OVER and OVER and OVER again. It's all about the grind. In my short time as a speed junkie, I've found that the grind is definitely worth it in the end. There's no feeling quite like getting a new Personal Best time after hours and hours of grinding.

Glad to see you decided to re-apply dude :). I'm assuming since you're into speed running you watch the GDQ's whenever they're on ? if so what would be your favorite runs ? i personally like the KH speed runs and some of the mario runs are pretty fun, also the dark souls runs are sick.

I think my favorite runs to watch are Luigi's Mansion and old school 2d platformers. I hope to be able to do a run at GDQ one day :)

I have thought about speed running "The Crew", "Just Cause 3", "Until Dawn", and "The Witcher 3". Any opinions on it?

Honestly, I don't have a lot of experience with these games, so opinions are really all I have. Also, like I said before you can speed run anything that has an end. You just have to keep in mind that:

01. Games that are new aren't going to have the same resources available for new runners (i.e. tutorials). Like the Witcher 3 only has three runs posted on speedrun.com.

02. Games that run longer (over 2 hours) are probably going to be tough to grind. The two games I've run are well under an hour in length, so I don't feel any pressure to finish a run if I feel like it isn't going well. If I were to play, say, Until Dawn (#1 ranked run is 3 hours, 53 minutes), I'd feel a little obligated to finish, even if I miss a trick that saves 5 minutes on the last level of the game.

These are the two issues I see with those games, but if you have a love for these games, then they won't stop you. Go get that World Record :)

Hey guys! Just a quick update. My stream is back to full functionality with my sound issues being resolved (my computer wasn't recognizing my headphones therefore I couldn't use my mic)! So now I'm back to streaming on Saturday and Sunday (and some Fridays). This weekend, my goal is to upload a run attempt of Darkest Dungeon! Before I start the run, I'll do a rundown of what I'm TRYING to do and hopefully things go as planned and I don't make myself look super silly :D.

Well, it's been almost 2 months and I haven't really heard anything... So, vVv isn't looking for speed runners? I wouldn't take it personally or anything :).

You can actually just delete this thread to be honest. I haven't streamed in over a month and just haven't had any drive to do so. I have one world record time and that's only because no one else runs the game. i've accepted that i'm not meant to be a speed runner and without that i have even LESS to offer vVv. So keeping my app open wouldn't really serve any purpose.
