Ward, Ward, and Ward some more. Even if you are not the support; hell all players should be using wards in the first place, its just that the support generally has more money to do so. I have had this argument far to many times with players who complain about their ranking believing they should be higher as they can carry but not win games all the time.

In any game with a fog of war, vision is key to winning. In SC2 knowing what your opponent is building and when they are attempting to attack is a major asset. The same goes with LoL, knowing when the other team is doing dragon, baron, setting up a gank, or shifting lanes helps everyone prepare. While it may take a while to get used to, it is important to always remember to buy (or have on you) 1~2 wards so you can drop them down at key locations that you pass by, even if just in the river to let you see if/when you can push a tower without getting ganked.

It may suck to have to do someone elses job, but if you want to move up the ladder then taking that extra time (even as a carry) to run through river dropping wards when no one else will greatly increases your win/loss ratio. Also, don't complain to your team that "they should be doing their job" yeah they should, but giving them a free win will not help them in the long run when they still don't realize how important vision is and continue to lose rank. Solo queue is about you, and you should always be improving your own play

I have to disagree on that. Someone could be doing an amazing job of zoning someone out, winning his lane getting towers without ever killing someone. That doesn't mean he should get higher rating then someone who winds up getting kills.
Different strategies can win you games, it isn't about killing the enemy players, the only win condition* is killing the enemy nexus.

*Surrender vote excluded, typically you win by surrender vote if its obvious you are going to wind up winning anyway and your opponents dont want to play all the way to that inevitable point.

To be honest, its just another excuse people like to throw around if they are losing. "I would have won top, but our jungler didn't gank", "omg their jungler is camping me", "omg noob support doesn't ward". They are basically all the same, people not wanting to admit their own mistakes and seeking a scapegoat.
