Even the smallest scraping of what Halo has done in terms of customization over the years would go a long way in Gears.

I am confident that Epic will do a good job, but I wish they, as well as other developers would look at the success that custom match options has in the Halo franchise. Custom/Private Match Options are the most helpful addition for competitive play in any game.

Great read! I find this ESPECIALLY applies to us brawl players. As we modify pretty much ALL of everything that we can. We ban the use of items, most stages and just about any and everything that is considered random or anti-competitive. I find at its core brawl is (even after the modifications it still has issues though lol) very anti-competitive and unbalanced in general. But we spent years working on creating a ruleset (that roots all the way back to 64) that makes a fairily solid competetive game.

Honestly I think custom rule sets are the best. I hate the games where I die on some crap such as; where the other had a default advantage such as spawning at the top of a cliff looking straight at the back of my head with a sniper rifle.

Map design is super important, even a small amount of a-symmetry can cause an imbalance. In sc2 Xel'Naga caverns bottom spawn takes one extra creep tumor jump to get the creep to the natural (3 on bot compared to 2 on top). While this is not HUGE it can play a role in some timing attacks as the creep might not be spread far enough to have proper movement.

This is a great article and makes a lot of sense. There is a lot that goes into making a game compatible to be competitive. It's interesting because to me it seems like the more basic the game the more competitive it can be look at halo 1 for example. If you make things really complicated you have to add just as many tools to tone those things down and make everything reliable and less random hence competitive.

I especially like the ICCUP maps created for Starcraft. It's like an entirely different game that I'm not used to because I didn't play Brood War.

Also, Gears maps need more COG pistol.
