vVv Gaming Begins 2012 With MLG Dominance
Five years ago, the concept of vVv Gaming was in its infancy. Spawning from an idea and a passion for Gears of War, vVv Gaming was able capture a first place finish at the Meadowlands during the first Major League Gaming event of 2007. Now, during its five year anniversary, vVv exemplified the organizational motto "Entertain. Educate. Dominate." by winning big at the MLG Winter Championships in Columbus, OH this past weekend! With exciting and emotional victories, vVv Gaming was able to demonstrate why it is considered to be one of the premier competitive gaming organizations on the planet!
The action began Friday night with our StarCraft 2 players, vVv Ruff, vVv Glon, and vVv DaiSuki battling through the open bracket. Newly acquired King of Fighters XIII player, vVv Romance, also started on his way through the KoF bracket by making quick work of his opponents. By the conclusion of the first day of competition, vVv Ruff and vVv Glon had each worked their way to an undefeated position in Round 4 of the Winners Bracket. vVv Romance had also posted an undefeated Friday night and would be featured in the Winners Bracket Finals when KoF play resumed on Saturday evening.

If you think Friday night was successful, the rest of the vVv Gaming competitors would argue, "You ain't seen nothin' yet!" The vVv community Halo team, vVv Ability, kicked off Saturday morning with an early win over Godspeed. From there, they would turn heads and win two more matches before falling to #2 seeded UoR Carbon in Winners Bracket Round 5. Their efforts solidified a share of an impressive 17th place finish. That afternoon, vVv REO and vVv CD Jr, the most successful and accomplished Mortal Kombat 9 players in the country, began their quest for MLG fame. Each player had battled their way through pool play without a sign of weakness and acquired a spot in Sunday's Top 16. To add to vVv's fighting game success, vVv Romance placed 3rd in KoFXIII and brought home $2,400 during the exciting conclusion of King of Fighters.
The performances from the first two days of competition would have been enough to put the stamp of approval on a successful MLG weekend for vVv Gaming, but we weren't done yet! When all was said and done, Championship Sunday became a story of success and emotions. Leading into Columbus, the entire Mortal Kombat community had an eye on EVO 2011 Champion, EMP Perfect Legend, who was competing in his first major tournament since defeating vVv REO in the EVO Grand Finals last July. The first match during Sunday's MK9 Top 16 pitted none other than Perfect Legend with vVv Gaming superstar, vVv CD Jr. A pre-match interview put the intensity through the roof before play even began. The tension between the two players pierced through the convention center as they stared one another down while expressing minimal approval of the other's chances in the upcoming match. The match lived up to the hype as vVv CD Jr took down Perfect Legend 3 games to none, avenging his teammate's loss during the EVO Grand Finals. CD Jr turned to the crowd following his victory with a look of confidence. That confidence would propel him all the way to Grand Finals to face familiar foe (and teammate) vVv REO.
vVv CD Jr. and vVv REO square off in the GRAND FINALS of the Mortal Kombat Tournament!
After this weekend, I can say without a doubt that CD Jr and REO are THE greatest Mortal Kombat players walking this earth at the current moment. The Grand Finals match was a back-and-forth, neck and neck race for the $12,000 grand prize. Due to the continuation rule, CD Jr began the series with a 3 to 1 advantage in a first to 6 final series. After a slew of close rounds and counters to stuff the opponents efforts, REO had battled from his early deficit to tie the series at 5 games a piece. The final game would come down to an ultimate, deciding round. In this final round, CD Jr would come out on top and take 1st place in Mortal Kombat's inaugural appearance on the MLG Pro Circuit.
vVv CD Jr. holds his trophy up high after taking 1st!
During the award ceremonies, an emotional, teary-eyed CD Jr held his trophy high and looked into the crowd. He had made it to where he wanted to be and vVv Gaming was back to where it began: at the top. Five years of success was able to shine through in that single moment. There was no better way to cap off a five year existence. vVv Gaming continues to engrave its legacy within the foundations of eSports and I can assure you that even after five years, it has only just begun.
