The Journey: A really boring tale about my gaming career
Halo MLG life stuff
My name is Nathan, and I have been doing competitive gaming for 7 years. Now 7 years may feel like a long time, but with the right people and the vast amounts of friends I have made over the years I can say it was all worth it. I'll start from the beginning.
I was 11 years old when I went to my uncle's house and discovered Halo 1. I was amazed. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. So what did I do? The next day I went out and got an xbox and Halo 1. My brother and I started playing alot and as we got better we went to local tournaments and found people near us that played just as much. Most of them went to our school. So we started holding LAN's on the weekends. I tried my best to keep up but I was never really as good as my brother and his friends. Fast Forward. Halo 2 arrives and I found something I was actually good at. I attended my first MLG event in 05. MLG Chicago. That is where the true spirit of competitive gaming took hold of me. As I walked into the venue I was surprised by the fact that there was this many people, like me, that loved to play video games. That weekend I met so many pros: AYB Fonzi, Samurai, Karma, walshy, Ogre 1 & 2, Saiyan, T2, etc... With all these things going on I decided, I'm going to enter the FFA, just for the hell of it. I got to 3rd round. Not my best but I had still been in shock. After that weekend I realized that I wanted to stick with this for a while.
Fast forward again. It is MLG 06 chicago and I finally found a team. It was a last minute thing and quite frankly everyone hated each other. I had a 30 year old creeper with a goatee, and his 18 year old friend as team mates. To top that all off, our 4th stayed at my house that weekend and he was some weird indian kid who brought a knife to the tournament. Not the best way to start out. Our team was on mainstage. Just my luck to get stuck on mainstage my first event with a team. We were out in LBR1. But at least I didn't have to ever talk to those creepers again.
I went to a few more events along the way(I ended up placing LBR7 which was good for a team made at an event), and LAN'd with many pros including: Triple 007, Ogre 1, Ogre 2, Walshy, Saiyan, Victory, Elamite and more(I cant remember). It was a lot of fun and it helped me improve a lot.
Eventually as the years passed I got better and found better team mates. I eventually started a team with a friend of mine NBK (now known on vVv as solid). Our team was NWS (No warning shots). We had picked up my best friend Sudou. We were all good friends in real life so we figured why not, we have to have great chemistry. Wrong. Once the game started everyone hated each other. I didn't work out well, mainly due to the fact that we all thought we were the shit. But we got better and we rode that out for a while, we started going to local LANs at our friend Joe Fries' house. I found myself to be a LAN monster, I loved LANing and everytime I just got better and better. So I would go over there maybe once a week and just wreck, I wasn't amazing but I had my moments. Joe Fries little brother, Totz, was pretty good and I talked about teaming with him a few times. But then one day while I was LANNING I got red ring. Usually when I get red ring I just pop open my box throw on some new thermal paste and start playing again, but for once I was sick of gaming. I didn't want anything to do with it anymore. So I left it.
Two years later I decided to go out and buy a new box and start playing competitively again, and that is pretty much where I am today. Solid went on to play more keeping the NWS name alive, I recently have asked him to let me try out for the team, so I will see how that goes. Totz ended up going pro so I kinda wish I would have teamed with him haha. However, my two year break was the best thing I could have done, I started focusing more on stuff a high school student should be doing like making friends, doing good in school, going to parties, blah blah blah. I'm getting so bored of writing this crap it is 5am, I need a life... Anyway, where was I? oh yeah but it gave me time to be more social and figure out if it was really what I wanted to do. I mean, I came back to playing so I guess it is what I wanted. I intend on making a name for myself someday down the line weather it is in the end of H3 or sometime in the hopefully long run of Halo: Reach. "First you jump off the cliff and you build wings on the way down."-Ray Bradbury. So vVv lets hope I can figure out how to make some wings because if not I'm f'd.
And that, vVv, is my long ass boring story. If anyone actually took the time to read through all this I would like to shake your hand someday. You are my hero.
I can't wait to attend more MLG events and I hope to meet some of you and chill with you. Thanks for reading and have a good night. I'm really tired right now.
